Descale your clothes steamer

Easily descale your clothes steamer once every six months by following the steps below.

Why do you need to descale your clothes steamer?

If you own a clothes steamer, it's important to maintain it regularly to keep it working at its best. A common problem with garment steamers is calcification. Calcification occurs when calcium and magnesium minerals build up in the appliance and can lead to blockages and reduced steam production. Normally, calcification occurs in the device after six months of regular use. You will notice that the device no longer emits steam regularly, or that the steam is much less powerful. In this case it is time to descale for a while. Your clothes steamer is going to be very happy with you.

Fortunately, descaling a clothes steamer is a relatively simple process and you can easily do it yourself. Below you will find a step-by-step guide to descaling your garment steamer:

Step 1: Use clean and clear water from the beginning

To prevent calcification, it is best to use clean and clear water from the moment you start using the clothes steamer. This extends the life of the device and improves its performance. All our STEAMR garment steamers have a special coating on the inside that helps to reduce the build-up of limescale, but unfortunately it is not inevitable to have to descale after a while.

Step 2: Descale with vinegar

If you notice that your clothes steamer isn't working as well as it used to, it's time to descale it. Vinegar is an effective and natural remedy for removing limescale. Follow these steps to descale your clothes steamer with vinegar:

  • Mix 1 cl of vinegar (minimum 12% acetic acid) with water in the water tank. Use the supplied mini measuring cup to get the right ratio.

  • Steam with the clothes steamer until the water tank is empty. Note: Do not steam on textiles as vinegar can cause stains. It is normal for some brown scale residue to come out of the holes in the headpiece of the garment steamer and it may smell a bit unpleasant. Hold the garment steamer above the sink to avoid staining furniture.

  • Refill the water tank with fresh, clean (filtered) water and steam again until the tank is empty. This ensures that any remaining limescale residues are properly rinsed away. Still do not steam on textiles.

Step 3: Repeat if necessary

You may need to repeat this process a few times to fully descale the garment steamer. When no more limescale residues come out of the clothes steamer during steaming, it is completely descaled.
