Steaming your curtains with a garment steamer: simple and effective!
Steaming curtains is a quick and effective way to remove creases and reduce dust and unpleasant odors. With a garment steamer, you can easily do this yourself without having to take down or wash the curtains. In this blog, we explain how to steam your curtains perfectly using both a compact handheld steamer and a professional (standing) garment steamer.
Why steam your curtains?
Over time, curtains collect a lot of dust, smoke, and odors. By steaming them regularly, they stay looking and smelling fresh. The great advantage of a garment steamer is that you don't need an iron and can treat your curtains directly where they hang. The hot steam kills 99% of bacteria and makes your curtains look as good as new. Steaming curtains is easy and requires little preparation.
How to freshen and remove creases from your curtains with a garment steamer:
Step 1: Fill the steamer's water reservoir
- Use clean water and fill the reservoir of the handheld or professional steamer.
- Plug it into the socket and allow the steamer to heat up (approximately 20-30 seconds).
Step 2: Start steaming your curtains
- Hold the steam head against the curtain. There is no need to leave any space between them.
- Work from top to bottom in smooth movements.
- Pull the curtain slightly taut with your other hand for a smoother result. Using a steam glove is recommended.
Step 3: Pay extra attention to creases and odors
- Do your curtains have stubborn creases? Hold the steamer on that spot a little longer and press the steamer firmly against the fabric. Use your free hand to pull the fabric taut.
- To remove odors: Slowly move the garment steamer over the entire curtain, holding it slightly away from the fabric. This allows the steam to penetrate the textile fibers more effectively, giving the fabric an extra refresh. The hot steam kills 99% of all bacteria and dust mites.
Step 4: Let the curtains dry
- It is possible that water spots may appear on the curtains due to the steam. Don't worry about this; it is very common because the fabric absorbs a great deal of water. Make sure the curtains are well ventilated, for example by opening a window.
- Within a few minutes, they will be completely dry and look fresh.
