Steam your curtains with a garment steamer: easy and effective!
Steaming curtains is a quick and effective way to remove creases and reduce dust and unpleasant odors. You can easily do it yourself with a garment steamer, without taking down or washing the curtains. In this blog, we explain how to steam your curtains perfectly using either a compact handheld steamer or a professional standing garment steamer.
Why steam your curtains?
Over time, curtains collect a lot of dust, smoke, and odors. Steaming them regularly keeps them looking and smelling fresh. The great thing about a garment steamer is that you don’t need an iron, and you can treat your curtains right where they hang. The hot steam kills 99% of bacteria and makes your curtains look like new again. Steaming curtains is easy and requires little preparation.
Here’s how to freshen and remove creases from your curtains with a garment steamer:
Step 1: Fill the steamer’s water reservoir
- Use clean water and fill the reservoir of the handheld or professional steamer.
- Plug in the steamer and let it heat up (about 20-30 seconds).
Step 2: Start steaming your curtains
- Press the steam head against the curtain. There’s no need to leave a gap.
- Work from top to bottom in smooth strokes.
- Gently pull the curtain taut with your other hand for a smoother result. Using a steaming glove is recommended.
Step 3: Pay extra attention to creases and odors
- Do your curtains have stubborn creases? Hold the steamer on that spot a little longer and press it firmly against the fabric. Use your free hand to pull the fabric taut.
- To remove odors: Slowly steam the entire curtain with the garment steamer held slightly away from the fabric. This allows the steam to penetrate the textile fibers more effectively and freshen the fabric. The hot steam kills 99% of bacteria and dust mites.
Step 4: Let the curtains dry
- Water spots may appear on the curtains due to the steam. Don’t worry, this is very common because the fabric absorbs a lot of water. Make sure the curtains are well ventilated, for example by opening a window.
- They will be completely dry and look fresh within a few minutes.
